Acupuncture originated in ancient China and has been in use for well over 2000 years. In practice, it is the insertion of thin needles into the body in order to affect the body's functioning. In Chinese medicine, the health of the body depends on the free movement of qi, or life force. Qi normally flows along pathways of the body known as channels. When the movement of qi in the channels is obstructed or otherwise abnormal, pain or disease results.
